The challenge
An author website for one of the most prolific academic writers in the world: 40+ books each with full bibliographic metadata, hundreds of academic articles spanning decades, ongoing news and media coverage, an in-print catalog and a separate out-of-print catalog. The aesthetic had to be scholarly and unmistakable; the system had to be straightforward enough for the author himself to keep current.
The solution
A custom WordPress theme on Cloudflare and SendGrid, with Advanced Custom Fields Pro powering a structured book and publication catalog that scales with the body of work. Books, Out-of-Print Books, Publications, News, Media, Contact, and site-wide search — every section sized to the volume of content it carries.
Vaclav Smil is one of the most cited academic authors in the world — a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba whose work spans energy, environment, population, food, and the history of technical innovation. Over 40 books, hundreds of peer-reviewed articles. Bill Gates has called him his favorite author. He needed a website that reflected the work without ever getting in its way.
The problem
An author website for someone with this kind of output is harder than it looks. Forty-plus books, hundreds of articles spanning decades, ongoing news and media coverage, an in-print catalog and a separate out-of-print catalog — all of it has to be browsable, accurate, and easy for the author himself to keep current. The aesthetic had to be scholarly, restrained, and unmistakably his.
What we delivered
- A scholarly aesthetic, executed precisely. Custom WordPress theme, typography-driven, no decorative ornament fighting the content. The kind of restraint a serious academic surface demands.
- A bibliographic system that scales. A custom post type powered by Advanced Custom Fields Pro carries the full schema for every book — cover, title, subtitle, publisher, year, ISBN, description, Amazon link — and a parallel structure for hundreds of academic articles organized by year. Out-of-Print Books sits in its own clearly distinguished catalog so historical titles stay discoverable without diluting the current list.
- A News and Media surface for ongoing coverage. Press features, interviews, and appearances catalogued and surfaced on a clean reading layout.
- An author-friendly publishing flow. The system makes it straightforward for Vaclav to submit new books, news items, annual publication lists, and bio updates directly — without an editor in the middle.
- A reliable infrastructure stack. Cloudflare for DNS, CDN, and SSL. SendGrid for transactional email so the contact form delivers reliably from a Canadian academic context to wherever inquiries land. Cross-browser, cross-device tested before launch.
Why it matters
This is what a flagship academic author site looks like — built around the body of work, sized to the volume of content, and engineered to last. We do this work for academics whose output has decades behind it and decades ahead of it.
